Colorado Dry Ice Blasting, an Environmentally Friendly Cleaning Method for Commercial & Industrial Property Maintenance.

Dry Ice Blasting is an environmentally safe form of abrasive blasting, where dry ice, the solid form of carbon dioxide , is accelerated in a pressurized air stream and directed at the surface in order to clean it.

The method is similar to other forms of abrasive blasting such as sandblasting, plastic bead blasting, or sodablasting but substitutes dry ice as the blasting medium. Dry ice blasting leaves no chemical residue as dry ice sublimates at room temperature.

Dry ice blasting has many unique and superior benefits over traditional blasting media such as being specifically approved by the FDA, the EPA and the USDA. Therefore this is a perfect cleaning method for restaurants, commercial kitchens, micro breweries, bakeries, laboratories and other places where cleanliness is of upmost importance. THE GREEN WAY TO CLEAN!

Dry ice blasting involves propelling pellets at extremely high speeds. The actual dry ice pellets are quite soft, and much less dense than other media used in blasting-cleaning (i.e. sand or plastic pellets). Upon impact, the pellet sublimates almost immediately, transferring minimal kinetic energy to the surface on impact and producing minimal abrasion.

The sublimation process absorbs a large volume of heat from the surface, producing shear stresses due to thermal shock. This is assumed to improve cleaning as the top layer of dirt or contaminant is expected to transfer more heat than the underlying substrate and flake off more easily. The efficiency and effectiveness of this process depends on the thermal conductivity of the substrate and contaminant. The rapid change in state from solid to gas also causes microscopic shock waves, which are also thought to assist in removing the contaminant.

This method is superior to sandblasting because the dry ice is soft enough not to pit or damage the underlying surface. The dry ice sublimes quickly into the air and only the removed material must be cleaned up. Dry Ice blasting eliminates equipment damage in two ways. First, dry ice does not erode or wear away the targeted surface as traditional grit media and even wire brushes do. This means that surface integrity and critical tolerances are preserved and equipment will not have to be replaced due to surface erosion common with sand, glass beads, and other abrasive media.

Second, with traditional cleaning methods, equipment is often damaged (bumped, dropped, etc.) while in transit to or from the dedicated cleaning area. Instead most equipment and machinery can be cleaned while in place.

Therefore special finishes, lacquers, plastic surfaces, electronic parts, electrical switch gear and components can be safely, efficiently and affordably cleaned.

Below is our Dry Ice Blasting crew at the Coors Brewery in Golden, Colorado to clean equipment in place without needing to remove it for cleaning, though it is inside the bottling and brewing areas. This is because this method of cleaning is approved for the food and beverage industries by the FDA, USDA and the EPA.

In the video below we see a fine finished lacquered part be perfectly cleaned by using the Dry Ice Blasting process.
